What bike and how much? |
I am wanting to get back in to cycling after a 10 year break (I'm only 25!). I am wanting to commute to work (10 miles in hilly yorkshire) and also have the ability to use it at weekends for on road riding. My budget is 拢600 ish. Is that enough and are there any reputible online retailers with a good selection of bikes? You should be able to get something decent enough for your budget. I would advise though, that you talk to a retailer first. There are many things to consider, frame size for your height, type of suspension required, gears required, what type of braking system you want, type of wheels. This is just a few, but the list is endless. I've listed two websites that I ordered items from, albeit not the bike itself. But their delivery service is excellent and Ribble Cycles is close to where I live has very good customer service, when I pop into the shop. Source(s): www.chainreactioncycles.com www.ribblecycles.co.uk Easy enough. Go for the best name and i would suggest Trek, Specialised! Alright... you've been out of biking long enough that probably much has changed in terms of styles, fit, geometry, etc. I'd definetly go to a shop, get fitted, and do lots and lots of test riding. DON'T pay so much attention to the brand. You will ride a bike that will just feel right for you. At that price they will all be comparable anyways. I'd maybe look at touring, or hybrid bikes but again, take a look at a wide variety in a store. DON'T buy a bike online, unless you've already tried it and know exactly what you want. You will be a lot happier if you go to a shop - It will most likely come with some free tune ups (we give 2 yrs) - It will have been put together by the people in the shop you are getting it from. There are more advantages, but I'll stop here. Good luck! work in a bike shop 拢600 will buy you a very good bike. Depending on your type of bike (if you're sticking to roads as it sounds you are, then a road bike...) you'll find plenty of choice in that price range. Head to a local bike shop (Yorkshire with its dales and forests must have hundreds!) and speak to them about it. Letting them know you intend to pay in hard cash will help you haggle for a helmet, gloves, and other such goodies. Reputable online retailers... http://www.evanscycles.com and http://www.chainreactioncycles.com... have a selection of bikes - Evans Cycles is probably the better one for you, with a massive selection. Just bear in mind if you order online you'll have to put the bike together for yourself - it'll arrive in a box, the same way they turn up to the shops. It shouldn't be more than straightening the handlebars (which will be at a 90 degree angle) and setting up the cables etc, but it can be a pain, especially if you haven't ridden since you were a kid. You'll also have problems if you need to replace parts under warranty, as sending them back to the online store is more difficult and time consuming than taking it into a local shop. Other disadvantages of ordering a bike online, especially as you've been out of the game a long time, have been noted above but hey I'm on a roll... you need to be fitted correctly for whatever type of bike you choose, you may even need to be shown a few tricks about how parts of the bike operate (there certainly weren't lockouts on suspension in 1997) and asides from that yes, you will benefit a lot from riding at least a couple of bikes to get a feel for them. You'll know when you find one you'll love. Thats why I haven't brought myself to upgrade my hardrock to a rockhopper, because I just love the bikes since my first one. If you intend to enjoy Yorkshire's fine off-road trails, then get a mountain bike. Remember - you can adapt a mountain bike quite successfully for road use (semi- or slick tyres and stick the saddle higher basically) but a road bike will always be a road bike. |
