Would a Honda Xr600 be to much power for a beginner's bike? |
Howdy y'all! I'm seventeen years old, and am finally going to be purchasing a bike this summer. I was looking at a dual sport, mainly because there's a lot of back country where I live, and as many dirt roads as there are paved ones. I was looking at a Kawasaki, but I can only get one new, and that would take me a LOT more time to pay off. But a neighbor of mine is selling his Honda Xr600 for $2800, and would be willing to lower it! What I'm wondering, is will 600cc be to much? I'm a tall guy (6'3' and growing) and about 165 pounds. Will I be able to control it? From what I understand, riding it will be fine, but when I go into back country area--where its already a pain to control--it will be a nightmare while first learning the beast. You don't choose a magnum for your first gun, but you can get used to the kick of it; would I get used to 600cc of power before it killed me? Thanks! I've owned and raced several 6-honeys over the years, and quite honestly the power isn't going to be the issue. The weight is. Full of fuel and ready to ride it's going to tip the scales at the 300 lb mark. It takes a lot of muscle to effectively ride a bike that big off road. On the other hand, you can't knock the thing off line with a D9 CAT either... The power is actually rather tame, especially by modern RFS standards. Heck, a newer 250F makes more real horsepower than the antiquated 600 engine does. But it's got the sweetest torque curve you've ever seen. It begins building power right off idle and just continues smoothly and evenly right up until it signs off. No hit, no hitches, just good, smooth, tractable power. If it could hook up the bike would go vertical up the side of building. Just don't expect to win any drag races unless your lined up against other old school air cooled dirt bikes of smaller displacement. Yes I think it would. Even though you are tall it does have a lot of power. You need to have the strength to handle it and KNOW how to ride a dirt bike first. It doesnt take that long to get use to it though. Just spend one day riding it and getting to know your bike and everything and youll be fine. I would suggest maybe try riding on a friends dirt bike first that is less power and getting use to that then ride the 600cc Oh and kawasaki is the absolute best in my opinion. and i want best answer. If your looking for a sweet bike that has tons of power, easy to ride, street legal, dual sport thats lighter than the big honda. The Suzuki DRZ 400 is a way better bike i know because i have one and its the best dual sport out there. did i mention it does over 90 easy. Nomad took the words right out of my mouth. The weight will be the biggest issue with that bike. You will never hear anyone accuse an XR600 of being a power house. It has a very mellow power delivery. At your height you can probably handle it fine, just be careful until you get used to the weight. Yes the Suzuki Supermoto would be a better choice but it's over 6 grand if I'm not mistaken. Get the Xr600, its a great price, Hondas are very durable and for what it worth I have a crf 150 and 230 both of which are fun but in reflection I would have been better off with a CRF450. It's the same size as the 650. The added cc's make it worth wile on the road. |
