What can I do to fix up my old takara roadster? |
I have a takara road bike sitting in my basement.. doing some research I found that these bikes were made in the late 70s-80s.. before it was in my basement it was junk picked off the street. I don't know anything about bikes, but it looks like it is in good shape, and it rides. I was just wondering what I could do to fix it up.. assuming that everything is original stock, what should I replace? I know this is hard to answer without knowing what/ IF anything is wrong with it.. but just assuming that all of the parts are original and so old.. what would probably be a good idea to replace? I want to ditch my car, and use this bike for commuting everywhere this summer.. so I want to make sure it will hold up and not leave me stranded. also, If you do not think that restoring this old bike is worth it.. please recommend a good bike for commuting around town.. again, I know nothing about bikes or what to look for. I'm willing to pay as much as $500 for a good one. Lots of ways you could go on this one, it's all up to you. Since the frame is probably lugged steel and has fender eyelets, it'll be fine for commuting. Probably want new tires for it, and if it's hilly you'll want to get a wide range freewheel, or possibly get a cassette hub for the back. Make sure the wheels are true and tight, and the rims are alloy. If not, that'd be the most important upgrade. You'll have to search a bit but you can still find 27" quality wheels and tires. A lot of bikes like this have been converted to singlespeed / fixed gear bikes. This makes for a really simple, low maintenance bike and adds a bit of cool factor. Good luck Scott |
