Bikes with no brakes? |
Why do some road bikes not have brakes? How do you stop? Ex. Specialized S-Works. S-Works most certainly do have standard hand brakes! If you saw a custom single speed (fixed gear) that could explain it. If the bike has no brakes it has no freewheel or freehub. That is when you pedal forward or backward the bike would go forward or backward. You must pedal all the time you are moving. This is what provides the braking. You apply reverse pressure on the pedals to brake. Single speeds are somewhat popular with some cyclist. They like the simplicity and uniqueness of it. It requires a wide range of skills to ride successfully. You must be able to pedal in a very wide cadence range, plan you route far ahead of a normal rider, have avoidance strategies to deal with surprises etc. Riding a fixed gear as it's termed, makes you a better cyclist. These bikes are derived from track bikes. Yikes! Stay away from Lombard St. in San Francisco!!! some bikes have a brake in the rear hub which works when you pedal backwards some bikes have whats called a coaster brake. Push back on the pedal and the bike stops. Some bikes have hand brakes either grabbing the wheel or a disk brake. But some bikes called track or fixed gears have no coasting ability, so the moment you stop pedaling the bike is going to slow down. type in fixed gear at youtube and look |
