I am 6'7, 285 lbs. I am thinking of buying a Seven Alaris, please give me your thoughts? |
I am looking to buy a new road bike. I currently have a Trek 1500 FX 25in hybred. I want to upgrade to "the last bike I am ever going to buy" I am 6' 7' 285 lbs, so a steel bike is out. Want to be out the door for about $5 K if possible. (Probably eliminates carbon.) Looking at Seven because with my body shape (I have a 32 inch inseem, all height in the upper body.) an off the rack bike isn't going to work. I need a LONG top tube. Suggestions? Thanks, Any bike that has a Ti main triangle would be recommended for someone of your size, and Seven is one of the best with Ti. I own a titanium bike too. Titanium usually gets less solid as sizes go higher so try test ride a Seven close to the size you need to see if it is stiff enough for you. You can't go wrong with custom frame sizing but today's compact sloping frames can accomodate your short inseam and long torso. Ti is just about indestructible but you can easily twist and torque it to cause unwanted shifting, chain rub, problems with handling and inefficient power transfer IF it is not built properly. I'm sure Seven knows what they're doing though. Seven is an excellent choice if you have the money, so I say go for it... your other choice would be any other custom builder... Look at steel. It is easier to get different tube dimensions to stiffen up a steel frame. A big dude may find Ti too springy. I tried a Serotta Ti as well as multiple Litespeeds and they were noodles. Lots of flex in the bottom bracket and I'm "only" 210lbs. If this is truly your last bike make sure you like it. If Shimagnolo et al decide to make 12 speed hubs Ti, Al, Carbonium bikes can't be spread to take wider hubs. Look at Waterford or Zinn both specialize in customs for tall folks. |
