What is the real difference between Shimano 105 and Ultegra componentry? Help!? |
I am really embracing long (75-100 miles a day), organized road bike events as well as duathlons, and have been hunting for a great road bike. I have my sights on the Specialized Ruby Comp, but feel as though the price is a bit high for 105 componentry. For about $200 more you can get a Giant TCR composite womens with ultegra 10 speed, mavic wheels with the cranks using 53/39 tooth. The Ruby uses shimano wheels, 105 10 speed, and the cranks are "compact" meaning 50/36 tooth chainrings. The TCR composite 3 uses 105 10 speed and is a rough equivalent (isn't women specific) tips about $1800. Look at all the specs, there are minor differences (some use full carbon fork, others a combo of alloy and carbon). The real difference between 105 & ultegra ? It didn't have much wear in it--maybe a couple thousand miles. It's all Ultegra with a Dura-Ace rear derailleur. Granted, '99 Ultegra and Dura-Ace are probably more comparable to today's 105 stuff, but if you want quality at a discount, find a good used bike. 105 is fine...I went for many years on that before finally upgrading to ultegra. Perhaps a tad heavier, and slightly less attractive. If the price is high, you are paying for the name...and it is a good name, I have a Specialized as well, and love it. You could try to barter with the shop. Ask them to upgrade it to ultegra and see what they say. Remember though, the fit of the bike is most important, especially for those long miles. Weight, cost, design and maybe, a bit of performance difference. |
