How reliable are some motorcycles? |
I'm something of a neophyte with bikes and am, at this point, unsure what I want. I used to own an old Yamaha YZ-250 and loved it, but the BMW on/off-road bikes are too spendy (though that's what I'd love to have). So basically, I'm looking at a pretty specialized bike: either a cruiser or Harley or a sportbike. I really love the Honda's (price, reasonable economy and fairly decent racing specs...I don't want a drag demon), specifically the 600rr and maybe the f4i. I also am interested, however strangely, in the new Harley Nightster. I'm moving to Utah where I plan to do a good bit of riding, and I know a sportbike will suck over long distances. Were I to compare the two (and seriously, I don't need flames or silly comments about Japanese vs. American here), which would last longer, in the long run, were I to put lots of miles on it? I have a friend with a GSX-R who says they last about 25k miles only...is that true? Thanks for the help! Try this website it has alot of good information on performance and reliability as given by riders. Just put in what kind of bike you are interested in. http://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/honda_c... A BMW costs more initially, but they seem to last for over 100,000 miles. A oriental bike will be cheaper to buy but usually they don't last very much over 30-40,000 miles before doingsome serious work on them . Harleys are expensive, but do keep there resale value up. You should get the BMW if you plan to go off road some and drive a lot on the street. The tighter they are wound the shorter they last. The sportbikes trying to squeeze every last horsepower of of each CC and are going to wear out quite a bit quicker than a touring tuned bike. If you want a value bike for distance - think about a used Concours. Had a friend put 80K on one to and from work and never had to open it up. I have an ST1100 that clicked over to 75K last week and haven't even put a clutch in it - Oil changes, tires and brake pads... The ST is a bit pricier than the Concours and is a bit better bike but they are both long distance high mileage low maintenance runners. Umm..completely disagree. I've had many "old" jappers that have done tens of thousands of miles with no problems. Current 1986 VFR750 has over 120,000 miles on it with no major work done. Modern Jap bikes like Jap cars (bombproof). Let the engine warm up properly before going banzai, change the oil regularly and you should have no problems. The suspension and running gear will need replaced well before the engine gives any trouble. The 25k gsxr is untrue unless the bike is red lined all the time or basic maint. isnt followed. Generally the larger the displacement of the engine, the longer it should last, depending on how you ride it. I have had old Jap bikes and all of them have quirks(like the old Hondas which did not have cam bearings and ran the cams straight in the head, not normally a problem either, until it goes wrong). Maintain the bike properly and do not drive like a demon and you should get good mileage from virtually any good condition machine. Personally I like something with a bit of horsepower and Suzuki have only made gr8 longlasting fourstrokes(I Have never owned any Suz and dont plan to) so I suspect that statement on a GSXR is plain wrong. |
