How do they help you? Do they clip in like road biking shoes? Wouldn't it be dangerous if they clipped in? Because moutain biking has a lot of sudden obstacles and turns and stuff.
they help you because they give you more stability. you can maneuver in and out of the trail and do what ever you want. Having clip ins give you allot more control when you are riding. it is dangerous, but only if you do not no how to use them properly. and they are like road biking shoes they are both the same concept, but just set up according to the different type of shoe "road or dirt". You can set the shoes to be easier to clip- in if you like.
All in All clip - ins are a big part of dirt biking.
