Harley shifting? |
I just got an '07 Softail Deluxe (6 speed) and the shifting is much stiffer than anything I've ridden before. This is my first Harley so I wasn't sure if it was because the bike was new or if that was just the feel of a HD shifter. The clutch adjustment seems to be okay, it doesn't try to lurch when I put it in gear or anything like that. I'm a motocrosser so the whole HD thing and road bikes in general aren't my forte'. Most dirtbikes and sportbikes have helical cut gears that mesh smoother when shifted. Harley uses Acme (straight) cut gears as they believe they better handle the torque of the engine during the shifts. Becaus of the design of the gears, they tend to shift "qlunkier" than the japanes bikes. I'm a motocrosser too!!! yeah it's the bike you just need to get used to it thats all!! to get the BEST answer contact the dealership you bought it from A Harley is a cruiser, not a racer, and the gears go in solid with a clunk, nothing abnormal about it, if you get a few miles on it, change the tranny oil with 75-140 Redline oil, or Royal Purple, with make it shift a bit smoother. been riding 36 yrs, ride a chopped Harley now. harley trans. tend to be clunky check the slack in clutch chain or it could be too many rpms between gear changes;HD like a semi- lug shift , ease it from 1st through 5th and let it rip into sixth |
