How do i fix my gear wires in the bottom of my frame...? |
I washed my bike a couple of days ago and lubed it up good...So its time for a test ride...My right gear shifter on my road bike seems not to change when shifting gears...so i checked my wiring and its very lose underneath my bottom frame...how do i tighten it? or fixt it The bike shifts gears by the lever 'pulling' the cable and therefore 'pulling' the derailleur so that the chain gets shifted to a larger gear in the back. It shifts back to the smaller cogs by a powerful spring in the derailleur, which pulls the derailleur back in the other direction when you 'loosen' the cable. The loose cable is from the derailleur spring NOT keeping tension on the cable. IT sounds like your derailluer cable has loosend up to the point where the lever cannot pull enough cable to make the derailleur move. It may even have broken. It's also possible - though not as likely - that your derailleur is stuck. This type of reapir is not difficult, but is tough to describe. I recommend one of three things. Get a bike repair book. or look at a bike that works, the cable/shifter/derailleur/ relationship will be obvious and you should be able diagnose yours. or take it to a shop. Better bike shifter components have tightening adjusters at the shifter end where the cable goes in and/or at the rear derailleur. By unscrewing the cable take-up barrel the extra slack of 1/8" to 1/2" can be taken out. Being 1/2" is the most you would and can be done just be the adjusters. If the adjusters can't take out all of the slack you'll need to tighten the shifter cable at the rear derailleur. There is either a nut/allen wrench type of fixture that clamping down on the cable on the derailleur. |
