Cycling tips for beginners? |
I'm trying to get into cycling...but I don't know where/how to start. Should I just purchase a road bike and start riding it? Is there a class or something that I can take so that it will teach me everything? Another thing to consider is joining a cycling club. These are groups that just for the fun of it get together to do the activity. I personally belong to three clubs and depending on where they are riding will join one group or another. Many cycling clubs have beginners rides where they teach you stuff 30 minutes before the ride and then go on from there to do the ride and help out on the way. One club I belong to actually has a class you can take after which you end up with something similar to a certificate. There's lots of stuff you can get off the internet as well. Good luck! Honestly, you should just go visit as many local bike shops as possible, and test-ride as many different bikes within your price range as you possibly can. It will help if you know ahead of time what kind of riding you want to do, but eventually, you'll find the bike that fits you the best and that you are most comfortable on. And then, after you have the bike, go and ride it. A lot. Bike path, road, dirt, trail, street, anywhere you feel safe, that your bike can handle, ride. And then ride some more! Buy a bike and just start riding. Spend your money on a quality entry level bike and don't get to caught up in the accessories like shorts, jerseys and socks. This sport is expense so beginners can become overwhelmed and discouraged quickly. Most bikes come with clipless pedals so you'll need a decent pair of road shoes and a good helmet. Shimano makes reasonably priced, entry level shoes, Look brand pedals are easier to clip into for beginners and helmet options are limited only by your budget and color preference. Once you ride a few times and are hooked then you can go get all the "cool" clothing and geeky cyclist stuff. If you ride a few times and decide it's not what you thought it was gonna be then you haven't invested too much money. The bike, shoes and helmet can be sold on eBay if needed. Just start riding get a good bike and ride around town the more you ride the more you will learn. Try to find some one you can ride with, that will make it more fun. At first go and ride 10 miles then ride 20 then 30 miles. FIRST- go to a bicycle shop and ask questions to the fine people there. They can get you on the right track in deciding what kind of riding you want to do and the type of bicycle to focus on. Then they can show you some different bikes within a certain price range and give you some catalogs to look over at home so you can weigh your options. Then when it's time to buy, they will also get you fit onto the correct frame size and assist you with additional items like shorts, gloves, and of course a helmet. More than likely, you'll be able to get a discount on those last items when you buy your bike. From there, you will have an entire world of information at your fingertips, and you just need to ask the right questions... everything they said. and keep the rubber side down. I agree with the first response and would add to it ...Talk to your local bike shop about riding safety classes - they are offered in many places. Also, ask about group rides for beginners. You might want to avoid rides with phrases like "ride til you puke" or "everyone get's dropped". Ride on! |
