What's better Dura Ace or Campagnolo components? |
I'm trying to decide on componets for a road bike. I see that Dura Ace and Campagnolo are the top of the line, but which one is better and why? Campagnolo is a company that makes components. Record, Chorus, Centaur, Veloce, Mirage. The high end is Record http://www.campagnolo.com/home.php... Shimano make Dura Ace, Ultegra, 105, Tiagra, Sora (in road gear) Shimano's High end is Dura Ace. Between Record and Dura Ace the only real difference is the spacings of the cassette. Both are good group sets and both are used by Pro team's. Stick with one or the other don't mix them. (they are not compatible). Your money, your choice. If your not racing I would suggest coming back in component level. You only lose a tiny bit of performance and save a heap of dollars. Dura-ace is more confortable, and cheaper and works better from the start, also cheaper to replace when you crash, changes are much smoother etc. But it wears out easier. Dura-ace group is around 700English pounds Record wears in and lasts for years. Also it loooks so much better than dura-ace. Sprinters use it more often as you can feel when you change gear under pressure. But it is alot more expensive. Record is 1000english pounds Myself, a racing cyclist living and racing professionally on the continent (europe) But based in Belguim.. I thought Glenn and Dennis had good answers. The one other consideration I had between Campi and Shimano is that they do shift somewhat differently. While I think you can get used to anything, I found I preferred Shimano over Campi in the shifting mechanism. Like was said, both companies make good products. Dura Ace is the top of the line for Shimano, and Campagnolo IS a brand name, not a specific type. Campy's top of the line is Record, then comes Chorus, Centaur and Veloce. Shimano has Dura Ace at the top, followed by Ultegra, 105, Sora and Tiagra. SRAM is a new player in town, and their two setups are Force and Rival. It's personal preference which one to ride, really. The top level of each group is competitive in the Tour de France, so it's not a question of performance. Shimano is easy to find almost anywhere if you need to replace components, but you must replace the WHOLE component as Shimano is not rebuildable. Lance won his seven Tours on Shimano components, so they can't be too bad, right? Campagnolo is the ORIGINAL drivetrain, since the modern derailleur and quick release were invented in the 1930's by Tullio Campagnolo himself. They are Italian, and as such have a level of hand-finished detail and aesthetic beauty that Japan will never match. Campagnolo parts are also rebuildable, so if your $300 shifter stops working, a $20 part can get it fixed rather than buying new components. Until recently, Campy parts were more expensive than their Japanese equivalent, and those riders dedicated to the Italian brand have gladly paid the extra money, known as the "Campy tax." I am one of those riders, and prefer the clean lines and solid shifting of Campagnolo. I have not ridden any of SRAM's groups yet, so I cannot comment on their feel or operation other than to say they have been very well received by many. Their shifting is very innovative, but to my eye they look a bit "blocky" and unfinished. So it's up to you, but be aware that Campagnolo and Shimano parts are NOT compatible, so you MUST go with one or the other for EVERYTHING in your drivetrain. Oh no, not this one again!! Shimano nuts sware by DuraAce and Campag purists by Record, both are great and have their finer points, maybe Campag looks nicer on an Italian frame? Just don't listen to the coffee shop riders who argue over the merits of their choice, 'cos they really don't know what they're talking about. This is one of the classic cycling questions...Shimano vs Campagnolo. It's like asking "which is better, Ford or Chevy." Everyone has their own preferences. The reality is that both have excellent components. They have dominated the road bike market for so long, that only last year did a third, SRAM, even attempt to break into the dominate twosome. If you are choosing between Dura Ace and Record, you can't go wrong. |
