I asked a question a while back about lower back pain, everyone said it sounded like sciatica.?

Since then I've been going to a chiropractor, I'm not sure if he's acturally helping, mainly because I've still been riding my road bike, however I'm not going to ride anymore until I can figure something out. I guess I'm just wanting to hear some other peoples stories about sciatica.....how they deal with it, for example, chiropractor or sports and medecine doctor etc..
I did find out that I have something that some call military spine, which means my spine doesn't have the natural curve in it, it's actually just straight all the way up. Does anyone know about this condition or know the long term affects of having a spine that is too straight? I'm just trying to find out all I can, I've been in pain everyday for over a month, and I'm only 25 years old. My flexibility has suffered as well, I used to be able to bend over and touch the floor, now I can barely even put my hands past my knees without pain shooting down my butt. Any suggestions on what I should do out there?

I have had sciatica for 14 years, caused by damage to the nerve from a ruptured disc that was misdiagnosed for far too long. I have had surgery, been to over 60 sessions of physical therapy, countless adjustments with 3 different chiropractors, I have had steroid injections that did nothing but make the pain worse, I have been on numerous pain medications (including one that wrecked my stomach) and I have had an device implanted in my spine that worked but had to be removed due to rejection. I have found that walking helps the most (or swimming when I can get to a pool) and I need to avoid excessive lifting, bending or twisting and all high impact activities. I never sleep on my stomach and when I sleep on my back I put a pillow under my knees. When I sleep on my side I put a pillow between my knees for extra support. Some days when the pain is at its worst all I can do is rest. I can completely relate to the loss of flexibility because I have that too, as well as loss of strength in that leg and less mobility overall. I also favor that leg so I am causing stress on my good leg and it is affecting my ankle and knee. I have never heard of the condition you have but it is very possible it is causing some of your trouble. Have you had diagnostic testing to rule out any other cause of this pain, like disc issues? If you haven't, please consider it. If I find any info on your condition, I will post it later. Please take it easy, stay off your bike for a little while and rest. I know all too well how you are feeling right now. Best wishes.

Addition: Military spine is also called ramrod spine or flat pelvis. Here is a site with more information:

I had sciatica as well, and it took over 6 months for the chiropractor to get it back in line, but I've been nearly pain free for 3 years now, and it was worth it to have it done right. I think you need to stick to the chiropractor...are they doing any kind of traction? I think traction is a big part of curing sciatica. Good luck with your back!
I always had horrible back problems and finally a doctor told me to stretch my ham strings. It actually worked. I was a bike messenger for 4 years so i can relate to the bike issues. It may be exasterbating the problem. One thing I would suggest is dumping the chyro. They often treat symptoms and from personal experience, sometimes do more harm than good. Good luck.
You need some anti inflammatories and maybe a pain patch. Go see a doctor ask him to give you samples of a lidoderm patch. They help and maybe some type of anti inflammatory
Go to a good spine doctor. You need x-rays, or preferrably an MRI to figure out what if anything is wrong. Contrary to popular belief, a Chiro does not realign anything. For proof, ask him to do an x-ray before and after and show you the difference. You could have herniated a disk. Physical therapy, pain management or a last resort of surgery could be of help. But please, dump the fake doctor. Go to someone with an MD after the name. Your too young to not deal with this properly.
PA-C for a spine surgeon. And no surgery is not our first option. It is the last.
I used a chiropractor for my back also. I was in such pain I couldn't do anything. 2 weeks later I was working again but I'm still seeing him after 6 months. It can take a while depending on the severity of your problem. Give it time.

And keep in mind that usually, the alternative is an operation. Chiropracty is holistic medicine. Much better for you in the long run.
