Hardtail or Full Suspension? |
i'm a pretty light guy, i weigh about 120lbs and i do road biking pretty much everyday with my friends. but i also do lots of small drops (about 2 to 5 feet). i usually go on trails about four times a year. hardtail or full suspension? thanks =) For road riding, the full suspension is just waisting money. A suspension seat post is all you need to absorb the bumps in the road. The full suspension is more to save damage to the bike when taking drops. So the full suspension will help greatly when you go on trails, but not much when you go on the road. And remember, when road riding, a suspension takes away from your kinetic energy when pedaling. So a hardtail will let you go faster with less effort on the road. I would recommend a hardtail (with a suspension seatpost if you're worried about road bumps) since you go off road so rarely. It really depends on what kind of ride you want. With a hardtail, you're going to feel every bump and even roads have them. Put a suspension in it and you'll get less of the impact. It may also help your frame when you do trail ride as the suspension will soak up some of the load that the frame would otherwise absorb. if you don't need it (and it sounds like you don't) then go with a hard tail... It will be lighter than a soft tail, and you can get a good hardtail for less money than an FSR. by the way, check out a Specialized Hard Rock or Rock Hopper. http://www.specialized.com I think it depends on how much money you want to drop. A hard tail will be lighter and less expensive, but it is a less comfortable ride. A full suspension bike will be heavier and if you buy a nice one it will cost you a lot more. I have both, but rarely ride my hard tail, unless I'm working on skills. If you are a great hard tail rider, you will be an even better full suspension rider, as it is more forgiving and less bouncey. Personally, I would go for a Specialized Epic with a Brain. Expensive, but the brain only kick s in when you hit a bump. So it rides like a hard tail on smoother trials, but gives you the posh ride of a full suspension bike. I have an Epic Marathon, with hydrolic brakes and integrated shifters. Super cool. Or, if you really only ride 4 times a year, go rent one for the day, and rent a really nice one! Save some dough and always have the best ride. well full suspension will make the drop's landing softer but if you have the wrong bike for it you risk braking your frame, in hard tail the same thing, get a free ride bike, or if you choose hard tail so a dirt jumper bike |
