Where am I suppose to ride my bike? |
Sidewalk or street and if the street with traffic? I really don't know. I ride in the evening (for my safety and others) when everyone is mostly off the road in my neighborhood. But I still need help...I have been riding on the sidewalk and almost collided with a hydrant a few times...not cute at my age! Mango, ride on the street. Get lights/reflectors. Wear a yellow vest and light colored clothing. This question tickled me a little. sidewalk. where i live they have bike roads I'd ride on the road, with traffic. Hear me out on this... Cars expect to see you on the road. Take this situation. If you are on the sidewalk, and there is a car up ahead about to turn right into a driveway, or come out of a driveway. They will look just enough up and down the sidewalk to make sure there are no people, but you on a bike might be in front of their car before they turn. I work in a bike shop, and almost all bikes that come in to be checked/repaired after an accident, the biker was on the sidewalk. experience. on the street with traffic, in some states its illegal to ride on the sidewalk, if riding at night i advise you to get lights Contact your local law enforcement folks and find out what the law is in your area. I'll bet you they have all kinds of information and handouts on the subject. The laws are different from state to state, like someone said earlier. I'm accustomed to bikes being considered vehicles like cars - what I mean by that is that you ride on the street WITH traffic, not against, and you have the same rights cars do, in that they yield to you or visa versa just as if you were another car. Take advantage of printed materials and/or education provided by law enforcement in your area. It's as much your responsibility to be educated about the rules of the road as the driver of a car. Happy biking, and never forget: Safety first! A bicycle is subject to the same rules as a motor vehicle. Therefore it is illegal to ride on the sidewalk. Riding at night (or in the dawn and dusk periods) is dangerous. Ride with a light - both front and rear - and wear reflective clothing if at all possible. Stay on the same side of the road as traffic, keeping to the shoulder edge unless turning across traffic. Obey all traffic signs - including lights - and watch for other vehicles, including both motor vehicles and bicycles. And wear a helmet - for your own safety. |
