How do you drag your knee in road racing?

what is the technique to steer the bike and how do you get it to turn

anytime you're at speed on a motorcycle you have to countersteer to turn. Pushing your left handlebar forward causes you to lean left and turn let. Pushing your right handlebar forward makes your bike lean right and turn right.

There is more info on countersteering at: http://www.motorcyclegiftshop.com/motorc...
The first guy has it right, when you are at speed the bike wants to go straight, you lean and countersteer to make it go the way you want to.
you gotta be going fast enough to be in the friction zone that you can lean the bike over that far into a peg scraping turn, then put your knee down and hang on!
The first two guys are correct about countersteering.

As far as getting a knee down. Its really a matter of body positioning. You want to move yourself to the inside of the turn (before entering the turn!). Push your knee out then start your countersteer.

The benefits of dragging a knee is that because your weight is shifted, you don't have to lean the bike as far to get the same turn. You can also use your knee as a support or gauge for your lean angle.
It's easier to drag your asss in a turn. Try that.
First thing is learning body position. The body position places the weight of the rider to the inside of the corner. The reason for this is that you can turn faster and not have to lean the bike as fare. If you don鈥檛 lean the bike as fare you can go faster etc. Physics is cool!!

Race body position 鈥?

1) Not everyone does it exactly the same but this is my position and how I have trained many people. I learned from AMA pros and not all of them do it the same way.

2) Forget MSF. Not applicable on the track. For example counter steering is MSF. Counter steering is natural and people do it without being taught. Don鈥檛 do it consciously on the track. Im not saying don't do it Im saying it is natural and if you consentrate on it you will over do it. Plus your question was how to drag your knee not the fastest way to change direction. That is a different class.

3) Feet. Your feet are placed on the pegs with your toes on the pegs and heals up.
You will move your foot down to shift and then return it to the race position. You will NOT use your rear brake. It does nothing other than square cornors and you can鈥檛 do that鈥rust me.

Point your inside toe in the direction of the coror. This will make your leg pop out ready to drag.

4) Butt. Many people over hang and there is a whole other group that don鈥檛 hang off enough. Over hanging is common at the track.

A good way to know where to put your butt is basically one butt cheek and a little more off the inside of the seat.

Also slide to the rear of the seat, especially tall riders.

5) Weight. Your weight should be on your inside foot and on your butt. Weight the inside foot and sit as fare back in the seat and smoothly go through the corner.

6) Knees. Your outside knee should be hugging the tank and is also used for stability and holds some weight. Inside knee is dragging ground.

7) Arms. Arms should be loose. You should not get arm pump on a sportbike but some people strangle the bars when they should be nice and loose. Loose you can feel the bike inputs. The outside right forearm is also on the tank.

8) Still not touching and you have your body position is correct?? Then go faster鈥?really

There is one purpose for dragging knee and that is for the rider to gage how leaned over they are. The most common reason is because it is cool but that is not the purpose. Once you do it, it is easy. If you are at the track and really want to get your knee down take a bad lid and clip the corner. Get your knee down then move on.

Counter steering is the QUICKEST WAY to change to direction of your motorcycle! PERIOD.
There are a series of actions that take place prior to and during turning while road racing.
First, you will be looking as far through that turn as possible, which will start the bike to subtely change direction, followed by changing body position to the inside of the turn, foot peg pressure to the inboard peg, the counter steer begins, the bike leans and turns, throttle maintenance takes place.
As far as getting your knee down, it has everything to do with speed, lean angle (up to 60-65% max), your body position as another has mentioned and lastly how far you "hang off" or intentionally moved the inboard knee out.
If in doubt about this information, closely watch a road race and take notice of head turns, body position and speed.
Hanging off in turns also is done by road racers to accomodate the accelleration (exit) out of a turn, you'll notice that it allows the bike to straighten up sooner, thus you can accellerate harder.
