Is an shimano aliviofront derailleur also compatible with a 9-gear set-up? |
im trying to set up a MTB/hybrib bike which is light enough on road but also sturdy enough to withstand a slight pounding on the trails, is there any specific set-up I can follow? As long as your front derailleur has the capacity to handle your chainrings (front gears) you should have no problems. However, if I remember the tech manual correctly, Alivio rear derailleurs will not work with 9 speed even if you use different shifters which will be a requirement. Note that a 9 speed setup will be an expensive proposition- shifters alone will likely be in the $80 to $100 range, not to mention the cassette (rear gears), derailleur, and all that goes with the changeover. A bike with Alivio was probably sold in the $200 to $400 range, so perhaps it might make better sense to get a new bike rather than upgrade a lower quality one. Just a thought. Source(s): bike mechanic for 26 years As far as a specific set-up I'd say go with the components you prefer or the best you can afford and as far as the front derailleur being compatible with a 9-gear set-up don't worry about that because your front derailleur really has nothing to do with the rear gears, it just shifts the front chain-rings so you can use whatever model you prefer without worry of compatibility. Mirage's advice is solid without a doubt. If I were setting up your bike, I wouldjust skipp the front deraileur and chainrings altogether,it will be overkill. 9 speedsin the rear should be plenty fo gearing for almost any application. By skipping the front deraileur and extra chanrings, you'll save a decent amount of weight, you'll simplify the bike setup and maintenance, you'll save money, and you can reduce the Q-factor (how far apart yoru pedals are) making the bike more efficient. In many cases you CAn mix and match components (deraileurs, shifters, etc.), it just isn't a good idea because setup and adjustments are usually a nightmare. That'll be fine; the only question is the indexing on your shifter... |
