It's my first real bike & I'll use it mostly for canal road riding & commuting. I'll be spending about $1200 so I want to make the right decision.
Well, I have a Trek X01 from '2000, and I am quite pleased with it. I, too, originally bought it for commuting, but have put many upgrades in it, and it's almost as fast as my carbon road bike. Not to mention durable. I personally would go with the Specialized. I believe they have been making Cyclocross bikes longer than Trek, and while I ride Treks for both my road and mountain bikes, the innovation is not there. Trek just started rolling out their 2008 Madone road bikes which, finally, have some innovation, but are still behind Specialized to many degrees.
Additionally, in terms of bikes really make by studying human anatomy, I'd have to say Specialized's components are a better bet.
