Noise coming from my engine :( please help.?

I have a noise, not very loud, can only hear it when you are sitting on the bike, coming from the engine cover on the right hand side, the one with the oil viewing glass on it.

(Bike is a suzuki bandit 600)

It is kind of like a tapping metal sound, it taps as fast as the engine turns, except you can only hear it at 1000 revs because of the exhaust.

Some other infomation:

-Its warming up quite quickly

-The tapping noise isnt usually there

-It seems to of been since i started it and the throttle was stuck so it revved very high from cold.

-I had starting problems the other day

Any help to what it could be is apreciated.

I am unable to ride the bike at the moment, so i can not test it out on the road.

Thanks guys.

engine cover right hand side . is this upper or lower ? if its upper then it could be your cams are worn and knocking. if its lower well it depends. I'm assuming your hearing the noise when the bike is standing still and in the clutch is engaged. If your hearing the noise when the clutch is engaged its an engine problem as opposed to drive train. to elimiate a few things make sure your running the right octane gas and you had a fluid change. the old trick of putting a screw driver handle to yoru air and moving the tip along teh outside of teh engine almost liek a stethascope helps hear the noise clearer.
there may be a problem in the head -- possibly valves or timing chain -- look at your oil to see if there are any metal shavings --if there no metal shavings it may be something as simple as adjusting valves -- hope this helps
my bike does same thing my mechanic said my valves need ajusting no big deal, but get your adjusted soon good luck, ride safe
Sounds like valve adjustment. Check with a feeler gauge and adjust. There are usually specs for hot or cold engine valve clearences (thermal expansion will greatly affect results) so make sure which one it is when adjusting.
You should drain the oil, remove the side cover and inspect the primary gear and clutch basket.
I have ridden my 06 honda 450r trx for only a season and heard same noise. Took into dealer and he said my top end is toast. Finally warranty decided to cover the $1600 bill.
well first you could try changing your oil to see if it has any type of metal in it. Or you could try (if you are exprierenced) open the head up and having a look to see if there is any bits 'n' pieces in the cylinder.
