Etiquette nowadays.? |
I was born in 1950. Then, there were very clearly defined ways of behaving, speaking, etc. I knew all the rules. I respected my teachers, my parents, shopkeepers, etc. Now they seem to have totally disappeared. I sometimes find myself thinking, Have good manners gone for good now? Is this what to expect now from society? I find vulgarity, rudeness, very bad manners, swearing accepted as the norm, etc. Schoolchildren no longer let you pass on the pavement, you have to step into the road to let THEM pass, children ride bikes on the pavement instead of the road, if you say anything to them they just curse you, people are rude in shops, banks, restaurants, everywhere. Why is it so hard these days for people to just be CIVIL to one another? My sons who are in their 20's will call me and ask me how to do things with Proper Etiquette. The youngest was on a date and he opened the door to the movie theater for his date and there was 3 older ladies right behind him. He held the door for them, he was thanked, then his date wanted to know "What did you do that for?" he just smiled and said ask my mom. He never went out with her again. Because people born in 1950 had their hides tanned really well when they did something wrong. Kids today don't get disciplined as stringently because of the politics of being able to spank your child and how some mmbers of society choose to scream bloody murder when they see a kid get smacked. Children of today have been raised by their indulgent parents to think only of themselves...the "ME" society...and have never been taught manners... All you can do is continue to practice what you believe and set an example. Courtesy and civility are not dead, perhaps limping very badly, but not dead. ~ I work in retail, and I contantly have to tell children to not use the merchandise as a toy... while their parents stand there (having watched them doing this) and say nothing. Conversely, I also have to tell adults that they shouldn't make themselves feel at home with the merchandise as well. Last night, I had to kick a grandmother off a display bed. Shoes off, skanky feet on the bedding... she should know better, and if she's old and unwell, she shouldn't be out shopping at the mall. So it's not just the kids. TMS I was born in 1955 and I think it`s a lack of respect for anyone or anything, through a decline in discipline both at home and in the schools. |
