Need help! Beginning cyclist. Used Trek 5300 or Trek 1000. See details?

I am a beginner and not looking to spend a lot of money. I need a larger bike (60-63cm) so the Target/WMart bikes jam me. I'm debating between a new 2006 trek 1000 for $689+tax or a used Trek 5300 2005 model with 5000 miles for $850 (private seller so no tax). The 5300 has arrow bars ($120), newer tires and middle of the road pedals (Clip). Since it is close to the same money if I add arrow bars to the 1000, is it worth the warranty and 6 months of free adjustments to get the new bike? Is 5000 miles a lot of wear on a bike? Will I have tons of maintenance cost with the used bike? Thanks for your help!

Hi Brandon-
It looks to me like you're getting a lot more bike for about 170 bucks more. What should clinch your decision is what kind of wheels are on the 5300? I know what kind of wheels are on the stock 1000 and they are nothing special. But if the wheels on the 5300 are of better quality than the ones on the 1000 you're good.

The reason I'm saying so much about the wheels is that the wheels that came on my new bike are nothing special and I'm paying for it now.

The warranty and 6 months of free adjustments are not that big a deal. If that makes that much of a difference to you after you buy your bike you could set up some sort of maintenance deal with your favorite bike shop for them to take care of you and your new to you bike.

5K of miles is about a year's use for a serious bike rider. A pro is putting anywhere from 10 to 12K miles. I ride five times a week and I did two centuries last year and came close to five thousand miles 4800 or so.

I've had lots of used bikes and as long as you regularly take it in like every 700 miles or every 6 months you'll be good!

The one thing that my bike shop does for new bike owners are free tire repair and in our area that is huge. I regularly spend lots of money on tubes, tires and CO2 cartridges. Source(s): Experience
hey man:

list the wheelset and components for both. if the 2006 trek has entry level stuff, then I would definitely go for the used bike, if it fits well.
forget about the free adjustments, they mean nothing once you start doing your own. best bet is that the same bike shop does have a maintenance class for a low price that you can learn that stuff real quick. while youre in there, it would prove very worthwhile to attend a class on repairing flats.

cheers.
I like B S's post. The 5300 is a carbon bike, and, if there is no damage (provided the seller is telling you the truth), then I would buy the 5300. It is by far a much better buy than the aluminum-frame 1000. Like B S, I also have been riding for many years and recently purchased a carbon bike. O.M.G., you have no idea what the difference is! Aero bars can be bought at any time, and you can look at various types prior to buying.
