I have a 1981 Yamaha Virago with no title, what are my options as far as registering it (Legal or Otherwise)?

Bought the bike, the guy went off to Iraq, I have no contact with him and have no way to get the title, what is my best bet for getting this bike registered? If I change the motor over to a different frame will that work? How do people registered custom bikes? Is there some loophole I can do to get his thing on the road? Thanks!

The other answers are guesses.
You usually need 'A Bill of Sale' even a hand written receipt is enough.
The typical process is as follows:
1) Go to DMV with the bill of sale to request a new title, They will give you an inspection form to take (along with the bike) to a Highway Patrol or appropriate Police agency for an inspection.

2) The cops will check the frame and motor numbers,if they come back clean, the inspection form will be completed.

3) Take the completed form back to the DMV ,pay the fee and a new title will be issued.

If you have a bill of sale you're set, if not, either through a friend or family member of the guy you bought the bike from, you need to get one.
As a last option you may have to make one up yourself.( Not really legal though.) Source(s): I've built 'special contruction' bikes and restored basket cases.
talk to your local insurance agent, he should be able to work something out or try doing it yourself with an insurance website like esurance, progressive, or geico
get a lawyer
you cant register the vechile without prove of the tittle or legal document stating that you purchase the car
personal expercise
Try a title service,if that doesn't work find a plate put it on and ride
