Specialized Allez or Trek 1.2?? (entry level road bike)?

i'm new to road bikes and would like to get hooked up in it :) i have been reading the reviews and these two are pretty much the best entry level ones out there. Any suggestions from someone who knows the area?

The two are pretty similar overall save for a few differences in frame design. I'd test ride one of each, make sure you get the proper size/fit, to get a good feel for one or the other.

As for the Trek 1.2, you should be able to get that one for $700 in most US shops. I do not know as much about specialized though so I can't say a price other than what they have on their website which is $800, but just from going through the specs on each bike, the Specialized would be the better bet. I say this because the Specialized is a 9-speed (so 9 gears in the back) which gives you a little bit better performance AND if you happen to break something or want to upgrade, there are many many more options with 9 speed than with 8 speed.

Also, if you are new to it I would go with the Allez triple as opposed to the option of a double if you decide to go with the Specialized. For just starting out a triple may well be worth it. Trek only offers the 1.2 in a triple.

Hope that helps.

I have found that the only way to decide is to ride them. Go to your local bike shops and try them out. Don't be afraid to ride them each a couple of times(maybe at different shops) on different roads and conditions. Even though they are of similar quality and cost there can be a big difference in how they feel. While you are riding them try to pay close attention to any differences you notice: How is it up hill? Down hill? Over rough road? When going fast? When going slow? Turning? Stopping and accelerating? Once you weigh all the differences it should be clear which will be best for you. Don't rush into it, you will be living with your decision for a while. Also make sure the bike shop takes the time to properly set up the bike for you as fit will have a hugh effect on feel.
Good luck.
