Is the Tommaso Imola 2008 a good road bike to get started on, and possibly enter a few races?

The Tommaso Imola is a nice entry level road bike. The engine, ie: you, will always count for more than the bike when you enter a race. But, your bike is going to be outclassed by the competition.

First of all, looks like this machine weighs in around 23 lbs. Even in a CAT 5 race, you'll be toeing the line with folks on sub 17 lb bikes. That's a lot of additional weight to muscle up hills.

This bike has mostly Shimano Sora Components. There is nothing wrong with Sora, but they are heavier than somewhat more expensive, race level, 105 and Utegra components.

Most folks are racing with 9 or 10 speed cassetts. This bike has an 8 speed cassette. Unfortunately, to upgrade to 9 or 10 speed cassette, you would have to change out the brake/shifter, chain, and perhaps even the chainrings. Thus, you'd be looking at a very expensive set of upgrades.

This bikes brakes are OK, but again, I'd rather have Shimano 105 or Ultegra brakes.

I suspect this bike has pretty heavy wheels. Rotational mass makes a huge difference in how fast you can accelerate the bike.

Finally, looks like the bike is equipped with 25mm tires. There is nothing wrong with 25mm tires, but most folks race on lighter 23mm tires.

In conclusion, this may be a great entry level bike for you and you may find it perfectly suits your needs. If you really get into racing, you will very likely want a lighter, faster bike is pretty short order.

It's not a hard core roadies dream, but it certainly looks good. Any components that go bad can be upgraded later. Try it out. If you like it, you just found a road bike.

Basically a hybrid with drop handle bars...

Its not a bad bike at all.

You may not be as competitive as on higher priced bikes but you'll be fine, at least until you decide if you want to get more serious in fast rides or racing.

Once you make the dive into competition, use this bike as a foul weather rider and a trainer.
