I'm looking for a new/used bike under $300. What should I look for in a bike in this price range?

I'm aware that a bike in this price range isn't a top end bike but I'd like to make a somewhat informed choice being completly ignorant of how to differentiate between them. What advice can you give me?

I'd like to buy a road bike or hybrid and would consider buying used. If I buy used, additionally what advice would you give to ensure I don't buy a stolen bicycle?

Thanks in advance,
Daniel

Used would be the way to get the best value. Also check out the police auctions in your area (I just missed the last one around here durnit).

New bikes can be had for 300, but you'll get a much better bike if you can stretch your budget to 400. Visit several bike shops during the week to get the best service (weekends are usually either too busy or the best salesmen have the days off) and see whats out there. By visiting several, you can get a better feel for which shop has your best interests in mind. I have 4 bike shops within about 30 miles of me, and two of them are A+ and the other two are run by pure crooks, so trust your instincts. If you feel pressured, thank them and leave. Do not buy on your first visit ; a bike is a long term deal so you need to buy one that you are gonna like or you wont ride it. The usual procedure to test ride a bike is to give them your I.D. , so dont be scared away by that request on their part....ride several and soon one will usually stand out as the one for you...

dick's and galleons both have great bikes, some even under 100 dollars. their sales people will help you pick the right bike for you.
also, if you have any small bike shops near you, the bikes will be more expensive (mostly still under 300 though) , but you'll get better coustomer service.

dont no where u live but value fo money bikes in the uk you should take a look at some of the carrera road/ hybrid bikes, for the price beats most other brands on spec.. also you can get good deals on the old 07 models!

Try www.craigslist.org they have a good bikes that are under $300
