What is the best City/Commuter Bike for around $800?

I currently have a single speed but need another good bike to get around a hilly city on. Don't want too many gears or gadgets, just a nice simple efficient road bike with flat bars. Thanks!

I have heard great things about the Trek Portland, though I don't own one.

I recently converted an old 1988 21 Giant Mountain Bike into a Commuter for exactly the reason you describe. It had the standard 26 x1.95 knobby tires and I took those off and went down to a narrower smooth tread street tire at 26x1.5. Make sure your rims support that size - they should.

Anyway - I'm geared super low for the hills because that's how they set up MTB's and I get the advantage of way less rolling resistance.

MTB's are heavier than road bikes though - but about the same as "hybrids".

The Trek Ptld though is set up like a road bike but designed for commuting (in theory less maintenance, a bit heavier frame, sockets for accessories like fenders, etc.)
