Want to know what bike to get?

I'm a runner and swimmer, but I've never ridden on a road bike and I was entertaining the thought of a triathlon. I need to get a bike, but really don't want to spend a grand on it. Any ideas on the size( I'm 6'2" with a 34 inch inseam) and where to get one other then craigslist. I'm hoping to spend under 600.

dude - i did my first two triathlons last summer on an old 10 spd fuji with a steel frame i got of $25. you can get a great used bike for under 6, and a pretty good new one. these guys who say 'thats impossible you cant get a decent bike for under 2 grand' bug the heck out of me, because in my opinion they discourage people who might otherwise be interested in this sport. i sold two bikes on craigslist, you have to be patient when buying used, you have to wait until the right thing comes along. good luck and go for it! triathlons are a blast. (i just signed up for a half ironman!) woo hooo

I've used a Pinnacle Peak which is good for riding. For specifics, Todd Molloy's Essential Bike Buying Guide should help you choose the right one. It covers bikes from the lowest to the highest end. Used it myself.

Step 9: Where To Buy Your Bike -- has a listing of the best online bike shops.

As a base reference you will begin looking at 58 - 60 CM frames. Look at these frames at your local bike shop. They will also size you to the right frame.

That said for $600 you will not buy a competitive bike, even used you will be looking at an entry level machine. Go talk to the bike shop people and see what is out there -- that will help you with your used bike search, or, it will help you change your budget.
