I'm terrified of cycling on the road but yet she STILL takes me on it.?

Okay. I'm absolutely terrified of cycling on the road. It makes my pulse race like hell.. And I feel like a car is going to hit me and I'll like... die. Around 3-ish today, we are going up to my auntie's house by bike, so we will be on the road. I've told my mum that I hate it and don't want to go on it and she does this fcking STUPID BABY FACE WHICH I WANT TO BLOODY MURDER and says "why not?! you like cycling on the road!" and I'm like "no I don't." and she's like "then why have you done it before?!" and I'm like "CAUSE I HAD TO." anyway, forget that..

Is there anyway I can overcome the fear of cycling on the road? ;/

She won't let me cycle on the pavement, by the way. So it's like... DAMN. >_<

all i can say is the more u try the less scary it will be

and i agree wid u ={

Get a rear view mirror for your bicycle.
Keep an eye on the mirror so you can see the cars coming from behind.

This mirror:

is the one I have. I love this mirror because it is better than any other mirror I have used.
It's made by Blackburn, it is convex so you can see a wide field of view, and it mounts with a velcro strap. The velcro strap is easy to readjust if the mirror knocks on anything, and makes it easier to bring the bike through a doorway.

Anyway, the mirror will save you from being startled or surprised by cars passing.

One more thing, if it's any comfort to you, the price of oil is actually causing the number of cars to decraese.

Murder?

You need help, love.

Hmmm, your mum should listen to you, next time she challenges you just ask her ''mum whats your biggest fear?'' and ''how would you feel if I made you do that?''

In the mean time, maybe ride on the pavement when you can and if you start to feel your heart race then stop and walk with your bike till you calm down.

You must be very frustrated, I hope you find a way to cure your problem x

One trick to help you is to ride out into the road more instead of hugging the edge. I know that sounds crazy! But it forces motorists to actually get their cars over in the other lane instead af flying by you too close. Then there is less to worry about. It will be scary at first, but give it a try!

I can see both sides on this one. Howerver, you are going to have to deal with roads, be it on cycle, mcc, car, etc. Riding on pavements puts other users - padestrians/pram pushers/ etc. at risk and is therefore illegal.

What your mum is doing is not addressing your fear, or at least she is trying to expose you to your fear and hopes that you will overcome it via familiarity. This is not working or we would not be having this chat.

Try this: Find out from your school or the local police, what road safety courses are about. Enrol on these.

Next go to your local bike shop. They will know who the local cycling clubs are and the events that they do. Many clubs will run events specifically aimed at young riders. These range from skills events to group ride outs (Riding out in a group will make you feel safer than doing it on your own).

Welland Valley Wheelers, one of my local clubs, runs such events, having a specific sub club for young riders called WhizKids.

This is how I would tackle your fear, which is justified, but can be addressed. The roads will never be a safe place, but hopefully, these actions will help you to ride defensively and confidently.

Luck

Ya know, my mum would always ask me "Aren't you afraid someone is going to hit you?" I said "I enjoy cycling too much to ride in fear." Crashes and hits are going to happen. It's part of the game. If you don't like to deal with pain or injuries (like anyone does :)) then maybe you should take up another hobby. I've been hit 4 times by cars and had my fair share of hard crashes and still LOVE riding. Keep riding the roads and you might get over your fear. Try not to think about it so much and enjoy your ride. Get to the closest bike path if you can. Make a long ride out of it.

Hope this helps.

sometimes you have to drive into the direction of traffic to see what you are dealing with. It gives you an idea on how close cars are to the edge. Then, get a mirror for your helmet. It helps to know what's behind you. You should be a bit afraid while cycling but not to the point you are terrified. Do what you can to prevent injury. Wear a helmet, get a mirror to attach to the helmet and wear loud clothes.
