Bicyle help! Which bicycle should I get? (newbie)?

I'm a college student in boston and I am considering buying a bike for general commuting in the city and between classes. I am also interested in training for long-range distances but that is not for the near future.
should i buy a hybrid bike or a road bike or a touring bike? I'm completely new to this so any good advice would be helpful

General around town riding is best done with a hybrid. Wider tires etc. help out. Many hybrids can be good foe longer distances too. If you have no plans in the near future this would be my choice.

you should just get this and be the envy of all your friends.

I am voting for a hybrid. Be sure to go to a bike shop vs. a chain store...you will pay more, but will get a quality bike that will last and have fewer repairs. The shop will fit you for the bike and make recommendations as to the best bike for your needs. I suggest that you visit a few shops so that you can compare product lines and prices. You should able to pick up a name brand hybrid for under $400 and be sure to check out last years models...they often have a significant discount and may even be of better quality than the current model. Best of luck and happy commuting.

I would say a hybrid bike but I wouldn't be the best at giving advice ......... I am new to the bike thing myself

A good site I picked up was http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ they will post to Boston

I think a hybrid will suit you just fine. You can ride it on a several day ride with no problem when you are ready for that. There are some people who use hybrids for touring.
