Do some research on commuter bikes. They can use both the road and moderate offroading. Great for... you guessed it: Commuting.

I went through the same thing a few years ago & got myself what you would call a hybrid bike - one suitable for roads & trails without too much heavy jumping or stuff like that. Do get one with gears though as you don't want to make life too hard for yourself & you can then monitor your improvements as you increase fitness.

Find out if there's a bike club where you are & ask a few questions about who rides where & on what. Then go shopping online or locally & don't forget to get your safety stuff like helmet & lights (foggy mornings or dusk/dawn).

Once you get going you will be hooked - I ride in the early mornings before most other people are up & there is less traffic on the roads. Weekends can then be spent exploring trials with others - a great way to meet new people & get fit.
