Is exercising on a recumbent bike as good as a work out as a treadmill?

You may need to work out longer on a recumbent bike because you are sitting down so you are burning less calories (and using less muscle). However, if you are running on the treadmill, a recumbent bike is a lower impact exercise and might be better for your joints and bones.
There is a good write up about recumbent bikes on this page:

i y opinion i think that recumbent bike are a good workout BUT i believe an excercise were you lay down for the most part is not as effetive as an excercise where you use more muscles by being upright. you have to use more muscle so you get a better workout.
Nope, on a treadmill u use more muscles than on the bike. Plus the effort is greater. Basically u burn callories by consuming oxygen faster. When u run u burn more oxygen than when you're on the bike.
Try this. Go to gym and see how many calories u burn on the bike, and how many on the treadmill. Try five minutes on both and see which tyres u more....
