Looking to get a recumbent exersize bike for my mom,she is about 300lbs, most bikes say weight restrictions? |
most bikes say the weight restrictions are 250lbs...the ones that are for heavier weights are about triple the price...can she use the other bikes? Anyone bought with similar problems? First of all congratulations on your mom taking up cycling. Cycling is an excellent sport and may actually be better in some ways than walking because at her weight there is less stress on the joints. I don't know where you've been looking for bikes, my suspension is at box stores (Target, Walmart). You may have gathered here: friends don't let friends but a bike at a box store. Not going to go into a lot of detail but those bikes are simply too poorly put together and assembled for words. And you'll need more support and service than they offer (and they offer none). The main reason I guess that you're shopping at a bike store is the weight limit. These bikes are dangerously shoddy. Get thee to a local bike shop. 8-) Now on to the bike. What to look forr. What you are probably looking for is what some would call a "hard tail". These are bikes with no suspension front or back. Add a very sturdy set of wheels and I have to be honest her weight coupled with the natural flex of the frame is all the suspension she'll need at this point. Please fo not get suspension or take this wrong. There are bike racers out there, RACERS, at your moms weight. The category is called Clydesdale Racers with a mix of humor and respect. So you can be heavy and not only fit but actually competitive at any age. You can not get a bike with suspension of any sort, front, rear even a seat post that will stand up to her weight at anything under I'd say $2,000-4,000.00 But you can get an excellent simple "hard tail" that will work fine. Also consider the Electra Townies. Sturdy, affordable, waaay cool and fun looking, and especially easy to ride for new or returning riders/ I also would join, post an inquire at a more knowledgeable and bike specific site. This resource is great start but you need some more experience and info. I recommend.... Source(s): www.bikejournal.com Try running way cheaper. Maybe she could start out a gym. Those places usually have the heavy-duty stuff because of the amount of use they get. Once she loses some weight, one of the home models might work for her. Good Luck! |
