If I remove the gears from a mountain bike, will it still work? |
I want to convert my mountain bike to a regular bike A mountain bike is a regular bike. Now, if you mean a bike with a single speed, then you can do that. But, you will not have a coaster brake. But, why would you want to do that? The idea behind having lots of gears is that you can switch to an better gear depending on your speed or the terrain you are riding. My guess is you broke the rear derailleur and don't have the money for a new one. That happened to me as a kid, put the chain on the 3rd sprocket on a five speed. Worked OK but limited on speed or getting started depending on which sprocket you use. I have an 18 speed mountain bike and the derail-er broke clean off so i removed the safety guard as well as 5 of the gears leaving on #6 gear on the back wheel and #1 gear on the peddle and rode 11 miles back to my jeep. yep, but you do need to have a chain tensioner. MTB without gears are called singlespeed. I don't have the lungs for riding one, but for some its fun. A bike needs at least two gears to work one in the front by the pedals and one in the back by the tire without any gears, it would not be a bicycle... |
