Whats a good reasonably priced mountain bike? |
im a new rider, i want to get into racing, i need a new mountain bike though, preferably a hardtail, and something that is $300 or under For the price you're willing to spend it'll be tough to find a new bike. You may find a used one through your local bike club's website or bike shop's consignment area. As for finding a race worthy bike for that price forget it. It won't happen. Any bike in that range is just an entry level bike and would be too heavy to be a racer. A racing mountain bike would start in the $2000 range. Since you're new to the sport, get the entry level and go from there. I would suggest a Specialized Rockhopper with disc brakes. It won't require an upgrade for a while till you get good at handling your bike. And join a club. check out wal-mart. they always have good deals on bikes. my husband got a mountain bike recently and he loves it. You aren't gonna get very much bike for that price. Do not buy a bike from Wal-Mart or other discount stores!! If you are gonna race a cheap bike will break! The only thing I can recommend is either finding a gently used bike, or check out some of the entry-level Trek's. The steel 820 model is only about $250, but it's heavy, and has pretty basic components. I think they have some aluminum bikes for around $300 too, which is lighter than steel. Don't buy a box store bike, they are heavy, cheap bike designed for side walk use at best. Several manufactures have entry level bikes that can be raced, but they are on the heavy side. Visit Kona, Trek, Giant and a few others as they have entry level hard tails around the $300 range that will work well enough to see if racing is what you want to do. |
