How much is a half decent mountain bike in the u.k these days? |
as i've got 12 weeks between now and starting college i need something to fill some time with and fancied taking up cycling over obscenely long distances. But how much is a decent mountain bike? (not a really brilliant state of the art one) First of all, ignore the first three "experts'" advice. They're just building up Answers points with inane "advice". Wiggle are a good bike shop and they have a section on their site that lists independently recommended bikes. By "recommended", I mean in the cycling press. In the link below, I've taken you to their page with their recommended hardtail MTBs. The list starts from 280 Quid. I would say around 拢75.00 Long distance,try a racing bike. 100 pounds would be decent. If you want cheap, ie: from 49 pounds, check special offers from Woolworths and Tesco Direct. Additions sells one at the mo for 72 pounds. Loads on eBay for under 拢500. Good luck! :-) The absolute minimum you want to spend on a bike that will last through 12 weeks of use (and not in a repair shop) is about 拢250. For 拢300 you'll get a fairly good hard tail with a suspension fork. It'll have basic components - a cheap fork (which will still be a LOT better than on a cheaper Halfords bike), V-brakes (still will do what you need for a few weeks filling time), and cheapish chainset etc that won't last forever. But at a level of 拢300 you'll have a bike that'll last you for years and, should you fall in love with the sport like I did many years ago, will be ripe for upgrading once you finish your college course and land in a highly paid job ;) Check out Specialized Hardrocks, they've served me very well over the last few years, and the basic one can be bought for 拢300. |
