Looking for relativly "cheap" mag wheel s for mountain bike? |
just got a mongooses blackcomb mountain bike after i seen one riding around and it had mag wheels on it but mine didnt come with them. just wondering if anyone knows where i can find a good pair but relativly cheap. i checked on some biking websites and they wanted 500 plus. is there anyplace i can get them cheaper? maybe some used ones in good condition? Hi! I agree with you that mag wheels look cool and hi-tech! However, I would recommend that you stay away from using magwheels for your mountainbike for the simple reason that they werent meant for mountainbikes.Why? Let's compare them with spoked wheels: 1)Magwheels are difficult to true or straighten when they get bent. there are no spokes to tighten to straighten the rim. Conventional spoked wheels can be easily trued or straightened by tensioning the spokes. 2)Magwheels don't offer the strength and reliability of spoked wheels. Mags are rigid and don't offer any flex because they were designed for smooth terrain and slim,aerodynamic bikes.Strong impacts may break these fragile beauties.Spoked wheels are strong because spokes have a certain amount of flex that absorb off-road trail vibration and even impacts when hitting rocks and roots or when jumping. Combined with the strength of mountainbike rims, a spoked wheel can last long and give you lasting enjoyment. 3)Magwheels are rare .And because they were not made for mountainbikes,it would be difficult to find magwheels that will fit your mountainbike.Their hubs are too narrow for mountainbikes and their rim is also too narrow to fit mountainbike tires. And because they're hard to find, they can be expensive. In comparison, spoked wheels are the standard for mountainbikes and are very economical. But if you realy think you want to run magwheels on your mountainbike, your investment would rather go to Aerospoke branded magwheels.But I don't think they will be cheap.
