What is the best gear to set a mountain bike in for just general in the city riding!? |
I have just bought a new mountain bike with 8-speeds and I just want to ride it in the city back and forth to work and just for pleasure. What is the best gear to use, so I don't have to keep switching gears while I am riding? the one that feels best for you. you'll get all sorts of advice about cadence (how fast you pedal) and hills and shifting and stuff, but it all comes down to what works for you. if your knees start to hurt, switch to an easier / lower gear and pedal faster for the same ground speed. if pedaling is too easy and it feels like you have to pedal fast to keep up, switch to an easier / harder gear. simple. put the crank on mid ring, and the sprocket from 4th to 6th gear. actually dude it depends on your strenght. but i think your new in biking so thats the right gear. oooh, but switching gears is fun!!! ;-) but whatever keeps you at about 60-90 rpm is easiest on your knees and stangely enough...faster!! Find the gear that is the most comfortable. I do a lot of city cycling with my mountain bike and I am constantly changing gears. So, if your ride to and from work is a flat ride, find the gear that is the best for you. If not, unfortunately you are going to be changing gears |
