How would you fix a broken pedal on a mountain bike? |
i'm having problems trying to remove a broken pedal from my mountain bike. the pedal unscrews from the arm Just remember, the threads are left handed. This means you have to turn it the opposite way to get it off. If you have the wrench, and know which way to turn it (always to the rear of the bike or something like that) put it in a position that you can put a hell of lot of force on the wrench like stepping on it. The threads are backward but only on the left sides pedal. Just remember this tip, when you put a wrench on the pedal spindle, off is always towards the back. If it is sheered off, with the majority of the screw threaded bit still in your arm, I would look at taking it to an engineer, or bike shop. You will need a tool that drills into the sheered metal and then screws in, so that you can undo the pedal bit. Failing that, new arm and pedal might be easier. Luck is there a hex wrench fitting on the backside of the thread? i know on my eggbeaters, theres an 8mm hex on the back. if not, then you may have to drill it out. get a drill bit that is almost the size of the pedal thread (mayb a 1/2" or slightly smaller) you'll need a high speed drill to do this because of the material the pedals are made of. either the pedal will thread through all the way out the other side, or the entire thread will crumble and you can just clean it out with a rag. you should be able to purchase a new one at your local bike shop and they will have the bolts needed also. If you can't get to a shop, you might be able to cut a 2/4 down to size, use a drill to make a bolt hole and use that as a pedal until you have a chance to get a new one. Good Luck. |
