Whats the best mountain bike to get?

I need to know some good mountain bikes that wont give me any problems.

Just stick to the well known brands and you can't go wrong:

Specialised, Kona, Trek, GT, Scott, etc.

I bought a Specialised Rockhopper (an amazing bike for the money) earlier on this year and have had no problems with it - set me back around 400 notes. It was the 2006 model (basically identical to the 2007 model) so was in the sale - full price it was 拢550.

Check out evanscycles.com for an amazing range of bikes - it's where I got mine and they are very efficient and helpful (i'm not trying to sell them!). They have stores dotted around the UK as well.

Stick to hardtail (so those bikes with only front suspension) - because I'm assuming you won't be doing any hardcore off roading.

Full suspension bikes are designed for true off-roading and if you do a fair bit of path/road-cycling, front AND back suspension can seriously sap your speed (you'll be "bouncing" around too much).

Most people who know nothing about bikes will buy a full suspension bike because they think more suspension = a better bike. It doesn't. Each type of bike (full suspension/hard tail/road/hybrid) has its pros and cons and each is geared towards cycling on a certain surface by a certain rider.

拢500 will get you an amazing bike for your money. Just take care of it - buy a decent 16mm+ thick U-lock (don't use chain locks, they can be broken open too easy) and keep your bike clean and lubed to prevent premature wear and tear.

Hope this helps.
i have a next mountain bike and it doesnt give me any problems altho i never use it cuz im always skating
Gary Fisher.
Kona make some very good Mountain Bikes. They are widely available at Halfords etc. Be prepared to pay though, I think the cheapest Kona you will get is about 拢600. I paid 拢800 for mine 3 years ago and I've never had any trouble with at all ( and it's taking a hammering).

Hope this helps..
These are pricey brands, but you get what you pay for!
Yeti 575, Ellsworth Truth, Santa Cruz Blur.
If you buy one of the respected brands you'll do ok. specialized and Gary Fisher have given me many years of fantastic riding, and Kona, GT, Giant, Trek are all worth their weight too, and provide bikes in all price ranges to suit you.

The absolute minimum you want to spend is 拢250 for a rigid, or 拢300 with a shock fork, but i'd recomend stepping up to 拢500. Whilst you could buy a second hand car for that, you'll get a fantastic bike that will last you years (give or take a few component replacements, which come with any bike).

My last 3 bikes have been Specialized Hardrock, its a fantastic bike, great frame, and the one I have now (the pro disc) cost 拢550 and has very good kit on it, especially the fork which is better than some at that price level. You can get the basic one for 拢300, with the same frame, and you'll still have loads of fun on it.

EDIT: Oh and I forgot to say get to a decent local bike shop (they're everywhere) and ride a couple of bikes you fancy before you buy. Take cash and buy some extras with the bike if you wanna do some bargaining. Don't go to Halfords either. They suck.
I'm assuming you have the cash. Then it's the Scott Ransom.
