Mountain bike and hand numbness? |
After riding my bike for a couple of miles I get 'pins and needles' and exentualy my hand goes numb. Any sugesstions.. Simon W There are several things that can be causing this, and all can be cured by simple adjustments. Be sure to try only ONE adjustment at a time so you know which one works... 1) Your saddle is too far back and placing too much pressure on your hands. Move the saddle slightly forward; 2) You are gripping the bars too hard and don't wear gloves. Loosen your "Hercules" grip; 3) Your forearm to the tips of your fingers should be straight. Hook your thumbs around the grip, straighten your wrist and your outstretched fingers should fall onto the top of the brake lever. Rotate the brake levers until this is achieved. Source(s): 26 years in the industry make sure your wrists are straight when you ride. Check the angle of you handlebar controlls they are probably too high. You shouldn't have to bend your wrist to reach the brakes/gears etc. Try wearing a brace (just get a cheep skate boarding one) And some good gloves sounds like carpal tunnel syndrome i had an operation on my right hand for it all ok now Get some insulating gloves. Moving your wrists will help to overcome the numbness.. Try not to grip too tightly.. it could be because of the way you are holding the handle bars. what i would suggest is that you buy some wrist braces. you can go to the drug store to purchase them. I have that problem sometimes, but it depends on the terrain. Normally mine is because I'm gripping the handles too hard and plus resting all your weight on a certain spot. If I'm on hills and say gravel I tend to Grip alittle hard, but if I'm on a flat say asphalt surface I try to let go and kind of rest the weight from my upper body on my lower palms. Also invest in a good pair of gloves. A pair with gel in the palms, so you are putting less pressure on your hands. Maybe even upgrade your grips on your bike too. |
