Convert 21-spd "mountain" bike to single speed OR just by a bmx bike?

I bought this cheap $200 bike from Target and I've already spent about $150 in accessories and repair fees. I spent $67 on the rear derailleur. I don't want to fix it anymore, I'm only 15 and my personal stash of cash is diminishing. Should I just get a BMX bike from Giant for around $185, or should I try to convert this thing to a single speed? would I need to replace the crankset and cassette, or is it possible to take the sprockets off the cassette and gears off the cranks and use the ones I need?

Funny that you mentioned that. My son had a $90 BMX bike form Target that I poured about $150 into. I didn't buy the bike for him- his grandother did. Personally i would've spent more for a bike at a bike shop. Already, you've spent about as much as you would've spent at a bike shop for a bike that would've been practically trouble-free. Lesson learned. At least you were 15 and not 25. Many times, you get what you pay for. Also, buy a BMX. Fixed gear conversions aren't very safe-contrary to what ohers say. A fixed gear bike takes more abuse than a multi-geared bike. A true fixie has a horizontal dropout like a BMX bike. A conversion has a vertical. The problem is that BMX and True fixes are designed like that as a safety feature. The extra torque you aply to the rear hub can cause it to come loose or slightly twist. With horizontal drop out, you're safe, but with those converted fixies, You can end up seriously hurt if something goes wrong.
buy the bmx bike . youll spend way more than you paid for the bike trying to convert.
