Is it bad for mountain bike gear cables to be exposed? |
I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive bike ($150-$200). Some of the bikes that I like have a section on the top of the frame where the cables that connect the shifter to the gears are exposed. Some of the cheaper bikes have 100% of these cables sheathed in rubber, while some of the more expensive ones have the 'exposed' area. Is this a good thing/bad thing/doesn't matter? The bike with less cable jacket shifts better. That's because the cable jackets are prone to shrink or stretch with temperature or for no good reason whatsoever and this throws off indexing. So, for indexing shifting to work at all reliably, it is good that some of the cable is carried by the frame. 100% cable jacket is a maintenance nightmare. Hope that helps! Yes it could be dangerous... well the expensive bikes put lugs on their bike so they can use as less outer cable(the black stuff) as they can! reason is that you will have less friction which will cause better shifting and better response also easy to lube and maintain. The cheaper bikes with all the inner cables covered in the outer cable well poor brealing, stiff brakes and if it rains after a while you will be spending money on new cable. Bike mechanic and store manager. i have full cable housings on my bike and it works fine. idk waht the first guy is talking about. i have an XTR system with full cable front to rear. the shifter housing is made differently from brake housing. the shifters housing WILL NOT compress at all. brake housing on the other hand is basically a coil wrapped in the outer housing - enuff pressure will cause it to compress, but not alot. ill admit my rear disc brake feels different with full housing. ill squeeze the lever and not "feel" it until it locks up but it doesnt bother me. i reccommend full housing. it keeps alot of the grit out of the cables, if u like riding in messy conditions. i bought a Schwinn S40 DSX for $200 at target and adding full cables will cost around $20. ive upgraded my bike with over $1000 worth of parts and those cables have always come thru. just dont lube them with anything!! your shifting will suck wen the lube dries |
