What kind of bike should i get? A bmx or a mountain bike? |
Right now i have a bmx bike but i want to know which bike is better for doing tricks and dirt jumping. My friend and i made a big jump in the woods and im not sure if i should jump on a bmx. If i can thats great but if i cant what kind of bike should i buy and what brand? (i dont want it to be too expensive tho) If you want to do tricks on pavement and street, get a freestyle bike. If you want to jump on dirt, get a bmx bike. These are easier to control in the air than a mountain bike. If you want to go over terrain possibly long distances, get a mountain bike. You'll need the gears if you plan to go over terrain and differnet elevations. Personally, I think of you are a teenager, it may be time to think about a mountain bike instead of a BMX bike. If you are driving age, don't get a BMX bike. Mountain bikes are still cool if you are diving a car but don't look like a little kid on a BMX bike unless you and your friends are still hardcore into it. Lastly, DON'T BUY A BIKE AT WAL-MART! Go to a real bike shop. You can always get a Dirt Jumper style Mountain Bike. It is basically a Hardtailed Mountain Bike frame with a 4 to 5 inch travel front shock. The frame is heavier duty than most Mountian Bike frames with larger gussets at the head tube and throughout the rest of the frame. I ride a Haro hardtail "Escape 8.1" with a Marzocchi "Dirt Jumper" front fork which I ride on single and double jumps. On the other hand I ride a Specialized full suspension "Big Hit" when I go on freerides that have very large jumps or drops. You can get a good dirt jumper style hardtail for about $600 new and a lot cheaper used. I have seen some Dirt Jumpers putting "Gyros" on their frames, so they can do the full bar spins! Hope this helps? Dirt jumping is derived from bmx riding. Free-style motocross is derived from bmx riding.... therefor you should get a bmx bike. Hitting bug jumps on mountain bikes is NOT reccomended. Um...I ride a bike...A BMX bike. A bmx bike that's set up for dirt jumping would be the best choice. Even if it's set up for street all you have to really do is take off the pegs and switch to dirt tires. Pretty simple swap. And mountain bikes for freestyle is a big no-no. Edit: Bmx bikes aren't for kids as the first person implied either. >_< Bmx rider/All around bike nut 'bmx for tricks' - and that's what all the pro MTB'ers say! You'll develop better technique on a bmx |
