What is the difference in power of a 15 gear mountain bike and 24 gear mountain bike? |
I am asking this question considering that i am going up hill. How efficient is 24 gear bike than a 15 gear bike when climbing up the hill? Can anyone give me exact amount of maximum power these both bikes give? The gears of a bike are designed around the physics of ratios - like a winch would be; the longer you make the chain going round the furthest pulley against the first pulley, the higher amounts of turns the first pulley will have to travel. If the opposite is true the slower the front pulley turns and the faster the rear pulley will have to turn, but achieve greater speeds - assuming the lever is the same length but at a cost of higher effort. In this case the lever, the crank, will remain the same at every revolution. Therefore for a higher wheel speed you require the largest pulley at the front and the smallest pulley at the rear. This simplicity does not take into consideration geographical variations - like hills - wind - and rider differences - fat or thin - strong or weak. The measurement you should be more interested in - is the amount of inches your bike can travel with one turn of the crank - and it should ROUGHLY be calculated thus: FRONT COG / REAR COG X WHEEL DIAMETER IN INCHES. Therefore 52 front 15 rear on a 27 inch diameter wheel gives a gear of 93 inches - or 93 inches of travel for one turn of the crank. and 42 front and 23 rear gives a gear of 49 inches Power is something entirely different. I think the higher the amount of gears the more subtle the changes can be made. Like if you're going up hill sometimes it'll feel too lose so you go up a gear; but you go up and its too tight. So I think 24 would give you more options than 15 Bicycles don't GIVE power, they use it. And even a Tour de France level cyclist only puts out just over 1/2 HP consistently. Top sprinters can reach 3 HP for a short time, and yours truly tops out at about 400 Watts. not all 15 gears and 24 gears are created equally. the radius of the front and back gears, their spacing, the design of the frame and the materials everything is made out of play a part. i suggest you find a good bicycle shop where they know their stock and they can answer your question for you. if a bike is designed well then you can get better speeds with less gears than an inexpensive bike with a lot of gears. The difference is 9 gears options. I am not aware of a 5 speed cassette, but a 8 speed is very common. If you know the chain ring and cassette cog sizes than the gear ratios can be calculated. PK 24 gear is most versitile |
