I have a fairly good mountain bike and I have just had it for 2 months yet the shifting is really bad...? |
do you have any advice for me? I know there is probably a break in period and I have already taken it to the bike shop to get the shifting cables and derualers adjusted once. I will probably take it back again next week. Luckly I have a 90 day free service period. Is it normal for a bike to shift rough if you ride it once or twice every week? Cable stretch is normal, twice in two months with only a few rides is not. Bring it in again and have the shop explain the basics of adjustment to you. Ask them what is wrong with it and how they fixed it. Even inexpensive bikes shouldn't be out of adjustment 2 times in 10-15 rides. The shop may not have quite got it right the 1st time or you may have damaged the derailleur in a fall? No such thing as a "break in period". A bike should go for weeks or more without needing adjustments. As long as you're not riding it off cliffs, ect. And if the bike is from Walmart, Target, K-Mart....there's no hope for it. Like you said, there is a break in period, where the d茅railleur cable stretches a bit. From the sound of things, your shifting problem might be from a bent d茅railleur hanger (see http://www.parktool.com/images_inc/repai... ). Your d茅railleur hanger might not be as bad a shape as the one in the picture, but it's probably enough to cause bad shifting. Be sure to mention that when you take your bike into the shop. It is somewhat normal depending on how much stretching there is in the cable. I notice it a lot more and I think you would to with the brake cables over derailer, just because of the larger amounts of tension when pulling. Most shops around here have you bring it back within 30 days and then again a few months later. I would wonder if yours isn't adjusted quite right or like the previous poster said, maybe their is something mechanical that needs to fixed. Yes, what you are experiencing is very common. Believe it or not, many people that purchase bikes in a discount store return the bike for a refund for this problem when all it takes is the turn of a cable adjuster. Next time, when you go to the shop ask if you can watch how to adjust the cables. It is super simple. 27 years in the industry |
