I have just bought a new mountain bike and the brakes squeak. Is this normal? |
It goes on and off. Sometimes i can break without it screeching and other times it squeaks. It's so embarrassing. It looks like i have a crap bike when really it cost a lot of money. Screeching brakes are quite normal, it is just the friction between the wheel rim and the breakpad. DO NOT put any lubricant on the brake pads at all. You can lubricate the moving parts if you feel it needs it but this will not stop the screeching. use some WD40 in the brakes and near the pads. that'll stop them squeeking Mabey it is just rusty?????????you think????????????? Shianne Yes it is normal for a new bike - when i got my new bike, the breaks squeaked - it is the fresh rubber on the brake - once this has warn down a bit - it will no longer squeak. Check to see if a mouse is jammed between the tyre and brake. i have just bought a new bike too and the brakes squeak as well so i bought a tin of spray wd 40 oil and sprayed the brakes and that should do the trick it did for me Be careful with the oiling in the brakes, if it get in the rim or rubber pad, your brakes may fail. So go slow and test the brakes well after you oil any moving part of your brakes. Squeaking can be due to many factors: 1) New rubber that needs to get worn. No problem, just a little time riding. 2) Unadjusted brake pads: The rubber pads are not in the correct angle with the rim. A simple adjustment- 3) Moist or dirt in the rim (the side of it), that when in touch with the brake pad, a squeaking sound is produced. Just wipe clean the rubber pads and tired rim with a rag or similar. One good thing about squeaking is that it can help you get notice by pedestrians and traffic when you approach them and softly apply the brake. So take advantage of this situation and do not let the squeaking get the best part of you. As you might figure out already squeaking brakes are common and it does not necessarily has to do with the price of a bike. |
