What brake should i use for my mountain bike? |
i'm using a normal brake now. i' not sure what type is it i wanted a disc brake as my current brake did not stop well enough but, the bike frame does not fit a disc brake any other brake i should use? or should i change the fork and put a disc brake infront and normal brake at the back? get a new front fork with disc brake and a V-brake at the back. Before you go out and spend lots of $$ on new stuff, you can try and make you brakes work better. 1) Adjust the brake cables. Could be too loose 2) Adjust brake pads. Could be not fitted well. 3) Clean rims wall. Could be oil and dirt. You can also try new brake pads if the above fails. You local bike shop should be able to sort your problem out. Brake pads don't cost much compared to new fork, disk brakes, and not to forget, new disk brake friendly wheels. Well... changing fork and putting a front disc brake would make your bike ride better... but it will cost you maybe more than what you think. It's very likely you will need to buy a disc ready hub and then relace your rim to the hub (and probably need to replace the whole front wheel), then buy a fork and a front disc brake. Probably it might cost above 300 bucks. If you are going the route of changing out your fork, I would spring for the Avid Juicy 5's in front and dont worry about the rear, unless you really want to. The hydraulic brakes allow for less wear in the braking power (since you aren't stretching cables) and only need to be bled (fluid changed) about once a year. That in mind, they do run about $150 a set, but you can get a front brake for around $100 at REI right now (just bought 5 myself haha). |
