The Taconic is not a mountain bike. It is intended for on road, and off road up to perhaps rain rutted trails.
This type of bike is commonly called a "Sport" bike or an "All Terrain Bike"... these are often marketed as mountain bikes but have a descriptor that explains their usage.
That being said, the supplier of Columbia bikes, World Wide Cycle Supply in New York, does a very good aggressive job of speccing the line so it represents a good value... just don't go into rough terrain, and don't go downhilling...
