How should I train for a 42 kilometer mountain bike race? |
It's a 'cross-mountain' race in mid-September. I'm a 33 year-old male in halfway decent shape, with months to prepare. What's the best way to go? I race mtn bike endurance events year round. Sometimes I feel like I'm constantly 'in training'. I've found what works best for me is to find some hills and climb, climb and then climb some more. I'd also recommend getting a cheap road bike if you don't have one. Putting lots of miles on a road bike will do a few things. It will get you used to being in the saddle for long periods of time. It will get you used to keeping a high cadence and get the legs used to spinning. It will also get the lungs ready for the burn you feel in a race. I also picked up the Mountain Biker's Bible. It helped me lower my lap times by 10 minutes last year. I think Amazon has it for like $15 and it's so worth it. It has a list of good/bad foods, how to keep a training schedule, what to do b/4 and during the race and a whole lot more. Also check out forums.mtbr.com for some great info. Check out the training forum and the endurance racing forum. Both great areas to get some great info. Good luck at the race and welcome to the world of endurance mtn bike racing. After this race, I bet you're hooked and you'll want to do more and more of them. They are great fun and the biking community is a great group of people. First, get to a mountain. Second, why do you want to do that? |
