Is a short or long stem better on a mountain bike? |
I am a cross-country / trail rider with a mtn bike that has 4 inches of travel. Average height and weight. It depends. Fit is very important, and a stem can help, but it's not a fix everything. If you're riding on a right sized frame, probably a 80 to 110 mm stem is okay. If you have a stem too short, you make your front end to rotate too fast, and when climbing sections you can have the front end wander a little bit, but can lift the front wheel easier, while if you have a longer stem the front wheel is more stable, probably would help you peddaling, but would be hard on the downhill sections. what matters is your body geometry, i do XC racing and i use a Bontrager Select, 80mm, i think. if that helps you at all. im not sure how the stem affects handling. I think that you are the only person that can answer this. Do you like to be streched out on your bike? Or do you prefer to be more upright? Changing the distance in the cockpit can change the center of gravity for you. This will affect your turns and the way you approach obstacles. If you can afford to buy both stems then do it and check it out. its depends on how tall you are |
